Ultrasound elastography, introduced in the form of transient elastography in 2003, has become a fundamental tool for the assessment of patients with chronic liver disease and is a rapidly expanding technique in recent years. The large majority of ultrasound manufacturers have implemented their propietary shear wave elastography modality in their top (medium) range equipments, complementing the conventional grey scale bidimensional ultrasonography.

However, despite a similar general approach, the SWE modalities are not identical between different companies. Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography can be grossly divided into two two main classes: point Shear Wave Elastography (pSWE) and bidimensional SWE (2D SWE) as named by EFSUMB. pSWEs are technically similar among the various companies, although the findings are not superimposable, whereas 2D SWE modalities tend to substantially differ one from another. Some 2D SWE work in real time, while others with single pulse emission.

Therefore, specific knowledge about how to perform each specific technique is necessary in order to obtain reliable results.

Participants at the hands-on session will personally learn, under the supervision of tutors, how to perform liver elastography with different modalities and different machines (e.g. pSWE and 2D SWE) on healthy subjects.

They will also have the opportunity to ask the experts about how to best perform the examinations and obtain reliable results in Shear Wave Ultrasound Elastography in chronic liver disease.

Places are limited and a €20.00 fee is applicable for attending the elastography workshop. Pre-registration is mandatory. Delegates must be registered for The International Liver CongressTM 2017 in order to participate.
